While men all around the world have the potential to grow a beard, it feels like a strange thing to associate beards with the Korean men.
Some do grow beards but for some reasons they are few compared to the population.
Here are 7 reasons why Korean men don't have beards.
1. GENETICS: Genetics determine how your beards and mustache grow. For men Beard growth is determined by the sensitivity of the hair follicle (a sheath surrounding the hair) to a hormone called testosterone (the manly hormone).
Korean men have low sensitivity of hair follicle to testosterone, hence the slow beard growth
2. AGEING: Korean men tend to age at a slower rate compared to whites. Beard growth is usually (not all times) proportional to age.
The slow ageing of Korean men also mean slow hair growth.
3. CULTURE: Beards in the Korean culture is not regarded as desirable, it is actually historically associated with poverty, laziness, dirtiness and barbarians. This prompt men to clean shave as often.
4. WOMEN: Most Korean women are used to seeing a lot of their men without beards, hence find them more attractive and even in surveys they mostly prefer beardless men.
5. STANDARD OF BEAUTY: The standard of beauty in Korean is more strict compared to whites. The standard includes no hair on the face or body and really smooth skin. This prompt a lot of people using different products and methods ( even surgery to get rid of their hair)
If you wanna get the lady, you gotta keep it low.
6. WORKPLACE: Many company don't allow men keep beards. It can get you fired.
Since most people know you should be beardless to be employed, having a beard gives an impression of being jobless and miserable.
7. THEY SHAVE IT A LOT: How does one make beards disappear? They shave it.
Due to all there negative reasons to keep beards, Korean men have to shave their beards constantly, even daily for some just to prevent any facial hair from growing.
Culture does evolve and things do change, hopefully over time, we'll get to see beards become more normal and acceptable in Korea.
