Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, has admitted that his players’ performances in their first two games of the new season were “not good enough.”
The Red Devils began the campaign with a controversial 1-0 win over Wolves 1-0 thanks to a VAR blunder, before slumping to a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
United’s midfield has been criticized by former captain Gary Neville, who urged Ten Hag to sign a new midfielder and both Dimitar Berbatov and Jamie Carragher particularly critical of Casemiro.
However, Ten Hag insists United’s midfield is not the problem, instead blaming individual players for “not doing their jobs anymore” and running “in the wrong moments”.
When quizzed on the criticism ahead of United’s game against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Ten Hag replied: “It is not about the midfield, it is about the back and the front. That is why we were open.
“They didn’t run. They ran in the wrong moments, too late – especially the front. They didn’t recover. It’s a demand here – if you want to win games. For the first 35 minutes, we were so good at Tottenham.
“We totally dominated. We should’ve scored minimum once, I think twice. They were nowhere, nothing. And then things happened in the game and the players got distracted, not doing their jobs anymore.”
