A
civil rights activist Patricia Ozonu has called on the vice president
Yemi Osinbajo to probe killing of members of the Indigenous People of
Biafra (IPOB) by security operatives in Nigeria.
Ozonu who spoke to to journalists
in Enugu state said it is necessary the vice president orders an
investigation into the killing of 11 IPOB members in Port Harcourt on
January 20.
In January, the IPOB
conducted a rally in solidarity with the president of the United States
of America Donald Trump’s inauguration.
During
the rally, 11 members of the IPOB were allegedly killed by security
operatives, although the police said they used minimal force on the
protesting group.
But in her agitation, Ozuno said the murder of the IPOB members by security operatives should not be swept under the carpet.
She warned that such might be seen as a conspiracy against the Igbo people.
“Otherwise,
why would any gathering of members of an unarmed group is seen as
security threat? Why would their comments on national issues be regarded
as anti-government and who said these unarmed youths are not entitled
to hold a different opinion on an issue?” Ozuno asked.
The
security agents of the country appear to have vowed to continue to test
their strength with pro-Biafra agitators. The earlier we put this
notion to rest, I should think will be better for this country,” she said.
“Probing
the incident will prove facts on whether the IPOB demonstration in any
way constituted security breach and public peace and whether the group
was violent to the point of challenging security officers on duty or
preventing them from carrying out their official duties, as being
bandied in some quarters,” she added.
She further called for the
unconditional release of the leader of the IPOB Nnmadi Kanu and other
members of the group from the prison.
She warned that the continued detention of these people will continue to heighten the agitation for the freedom of Biafra.
