President Muhammadu Buhari is due back to the country on Saturday, February 11 after a medical vacation in the United Kingdom according to a presidential source quoted in several media reports.
The rumour mill had been activated about the president's health status while the president was receiving treatment in the UK.
It became worse when rumours of the president's death were falsely circulated on some social media platforms.
The presidency had to release several photos of the president to dispel the rumours.
As
Nigerians await the arrival of their leader, there are urgent issues
the president to address as soon as he steps into the presidential
villa.
FLAVOURWAY.com lists 7 of the issues below:
1. Rejig his cabinet
There
is no doubt that President Buhari is surrounded by some incompetent men
and women in government circles. It is time for the president to wield
the stick no matter whose ox is gored.
Time
is no more on the president's side and the blame game should stop
immediately, while efforts should be made to deliver the dividends of
democracy as promised during the electioneering period.
2. Ensure the 2017 Budget is passed quickly
Unfortunately,
the scenario that played out in 2016 is about to rear its ugly head
again. The current administration seems to be struggling to have a
healthy relationship with the legislature.
There
is a need for the president to get to work immediately and ensure that
the 2017 Budget is passed on time so money can circulate quickly as
Nigeria battles recession. There is no time to waste!
3. Visit crisis-ridden areas
The current administration has
been insensitive to the plight of Nigerians that have been victims of
terror. President Buhari needs to show leadership by example and
quickly embark on a tour of areas that have witnessed attacks by
criminal elements.
This will not only
dispel notions that the president is a sectional leader, it will also
give the victims' the assurance that they have a caring leader who share
in their pain.
4. Tame his overzealous media aides
President
Buhari needs to have a meeting with some of his spokespersons.
Characters like Garba Shehu, Femi Adesina and Lauretta Onochie are doing
the president more harm than good with their pedestrain and petty
statements.
These trio, have abandoned
their core duties and instead resort to name-calling, petty utterances
and twisting facts. The president is losing public appeal partly because
of these overzealous aides. They need to be cautioned!
5. Meet with religious, traditional and opinion leaders
Nigeria
has never been divided along ethnic and religious lines like it has
been now. The coming of President Buhari should have united Nigeria more
given the way he came into power, but the reverse has been the case.
The president himself has not helped matters with his polarising
statements, actions, inactions and skewed appointments.
It is time for President Buhari to prove that he is indeed for everybody and for nobody. The first step is to call on all those that matter and start afresh all over again.
6. Implement the 2014 CONFAB report
It
is becoming clearer by the day that the present structure of Nigeria is
not sustainable and the only way to address this issue is to
restructure the country. President Buhari needs to dust the
recommendations of the 2014 CONFAB and implement them, especially those
areas that have answers to our current economic quagmire.
The
feeding bottle arrangement of states running to Abuja monthly for
allocations is doomed to fail. The CONFAB report is key to solving many
of the challenges this current administration is grappling with.
7. Stop the blame game
The era of Goodluck Jonathan is gone. President Buhari needs to move on
and address the current challenges facing Nigeria. While it is
imperative that the government punish those who looted the country blind
in the past, it is important to focus on the present and the future and
leave behind the mistakes of our past leaders.
There
is too much referral to the past by current government officials and it
has to stop. President Buhari should take the lead by accepting
responsibility for our current failures and take up the challenge to
lead us to the promised land.
