Rector’s appointment: Withdraw case from court – Ede Poly ASUP urges National body

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic Ede Chapter, has resolved that its leadership should write to the ASUP national body regarding the appointment of a new Rector for the institution.

The matter regarding the appointment of the Rector has been before the National Industrial Court.

The Union passed the resolution in their Congress, which was held on Tuesday in Ede.

Part of the resolution also directed that the matter before the court which has halted the selection process of the Rector be taken out of court so that due process can be followed in the selection process of a new head for the institution.

The Incorporated Trustees of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) had dragged the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede and Federal Ministry of Education before the National Industrial Court to demand an end to the process of appointing a new Rector for the institution.

ASUP in a suit number NICN/OS/04/2022, had asked the court to halt the selection process pending the hearing and determination of its originating summons.

The ASUP Chairman, Federal Polytechnic Ede, branch, Azeez Olukayode speaking with journalists on the outcome of the union’s congress, also reaffirmed that the congress had resolved that the matter be taken out of court.

“Congress resolved that the matter be taken out of court. Though, it is not the local chapter that went to court, it is the national body that went to court and we said that from exco level, we are going to communicate the message in our report to the national body through NEC.

“Likewise, we are mandated to write to the management and council that we have resolved that the matter would be taken out of court. Not that it has been taken out of court, but the process that will lead to how it will be taken out of court will be followed.”

Also, other ASUP members in the institution demanded an in-house resolution to the matter.

While explaining that they could not afford another round of media war in the school, they held that what was of priority is to have a substantive rector who is well grounded and can give a good leadership.

“In all honesty, we have many of them around us here.

“We appeal to the Federal Government to give us an internal candidate among the shortlisted candidates,” he said.
