Osun NURTW violence: Police arrest ten, recover arms

The Commissioner of Police, Faleye Sunday Olaleye has revealed that the Osun State Police Command has arrested ten suspects as a result of the intervention of its personnel into the crisis that erupted between rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers’ (NURTW) in Osogbo on Monday.

In a statement signed by Yemisi Opalola and obtained by DAILY POST on Tuesday, Olaleye disclosed that various weapons, which included one Beretta pistol, two pump action rifles, two double barrel guns, nine live and four expended cartridges, five cutlasses and charms were recovered from the suspects apprehended.

Olaleye expressed surprise at the news of the attacks perpetrated by NURTW members in several parts of the State, with attendant destruction of offices and injury to some persons and police personnel.

The Osun police boss also recalled that a meeting was earlier held between the police and the union executives and other transport stakeholders in the State to avert any unwarranted attacks and forceful takeover of the parks in the State.

Upon getting information of the violent attacks, Olaleye revealed that he directed the Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to ensure the situation was brought under control and the culprits arrested.

According to the statement, “It would be recalled that the Commissioner of Police, the Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, other stakeholders held meetings with NURTW executive, members and other stakeholders in the State to avert these unwarranted attacks and forceful takeover of the parks in the State.

“All consented to maintaining peace, but it was a surprise to learn about the attacks by NURTW members in several parts of the State, with attendant destruction of offices and injury to some persons and police personnel.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Faleye S. Olaleye, psc, swiftly charged the Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to ensure the situation is brought under control and arrest culprits.”

While frowning at the violence, Olaleye assured the general public that the police were fully on top of the situation as mobile, conventional, tactical and patrol teams have been deployed to curtail the crises.

He also warned that anyone found culpable in the unwarranted violence and attacks will face the full wrath of the law,

The police boss also advised members of the public to go about their lawful businesses and work without fear of insecurity or attacks in any part of the State.

Recall that rival gangs of the transport unions engaged in violence in selected motorparks across the State capital, Osogbo, on Monday morning.

The day before, a rival faction of the transport union had attacked the Union Secretariat at Sadiat Hotel area of Osogbo and in the process a pregnant staff of the union was assaulted, while the Financial Secretary and other staff members were injured and their vehicles destroyed.

In the aftermath of the violence, the State governor, Ademola Adeleke issued a stern warning to all transport unions to allow peace to reign within the motorparks.

Adeleke also directed security agencies across the State to ensure that the violence was brought to an end and to ensure peace throughout the nooks and crannies of the State.
