The Niger State Universal Basic Education Board, NSUBEB, has vowed to revoke contracts and blacklist contractors handling about 180 ongoing projects in the state.
The new Board Chairman, Alhaji Saidu Ibrahim, who stated this in Minna, said upon assumption of office, he inherited poor and substandard projects.
He stated, “It is for this reason that I decided to review the mode of supervision and monitoring of projects, since I assumed office in the month of August.”
“This was further affirmed recently, during a visit by the National Assembly committee members on Basic Education and Services on their oversight function to the state.”
Harping on the need for standardization, he insisted that the present administration in the state is committed to the prompt payment of counterpart funds for over 2,000 projects thus far.
“We are assuming payment of contracts accordingly. I am also reading this riot act to staff of the board staff, especially the technical officers who do compromise to desist from it. It is not going to be business as usual. They should be prepared to face the wrath of the law, if found wanting in any way,” Ibrahim maintained.
He urged communities where the projects were sited to take ownership of them to stop greedy contractors who are out to execute substandard projects in order to maximize profits to the detriment of the state.
The state SUBEB chairman also disclosed that the Niger State has a total of over 3,700 schools as a result of its large landmass.
Hence the National House of Assembly Committee on Basic Education and Services commended the state as well sympathized with it for the wider nature of the state while
“It is for this reason that during the oversight visit, members of NASS commended and sympathized with the state. They called on the state government to partner the National Assembly in providing the required logistics for schools in the state,” he added.
