Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has chastised the National Assembly for failing to pass measures aimed at ensuring gender equality in Nigeria.
He also faulted the White House for not assisting the women in achieving their goal throughout the constitutional amendment process.
Even after the wives of the president and vice president visited plenary sessions to lobby support for the laws, the Governor accused the National Assembly of disgracefully treating women.
On Friday, he spoke at the commissioning of the Ahoada Odiemerenyi-Ihugbogo-Odieke route in the state's Ahoada East Local Government.
Governor Wike remarked that the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State made it a policy to elect women to the positions of council vice chairmen and at least five councillors in each local government area, and that the APC could have done the same at the federal level.
"When I watched our spouses, women being shamed, I have never seen anything like that; where the wives of the president and vice president will go to the National Assembly plenary session to persuade them to at least help the women," he remarked.
"The same party that promised them failed them." There is nothing for ladies.
"It's not a matter of going to the state Assembly or our party to lobby; it's a matter of leadership." Our party controls the state, and everything we say will be done, as will the National Assembly, which is controlled by the APC.
"There is no way they would have embarrassed the women if the president was in favor of it." It's such a disgrace."
