Natural mineral resources are gifts from nature that many nations tap into for huge revenue, but in Nigeria, our case is different. One out of many is the mineral reserves that are milking every time. Oil and gas, as our major foreign exchange, has not been sustainable over the years. We need to break-even, in other precious minerals that are laying fallow across the country.
Countries like South Africa, Ivory Coast, Botswana, Mali, etc. took their natural gifts. This is contributing to their GDP yearly. Nigeria too can stop monopolizing the exploration of crude oil and develop other precious mineral resources across the country. This might be the solution we need to survive as a country.
Nigeria is blessed with different minerals like coal, bitumen, gold, oil and gas, iron ore, Lead, etc. All we need is to create an enabling environment for the exploration of these natural gifts. In Ondo state, for example, bitumen has been contributing to the internally generated revenue of the state. The discovery of coal in Enugu has positively affected the development of the town and the state in general.
Gold mining is an area we need to look into in this country. When you consider the price of gold in the international market, it is just a potential yet to be tapped into. What government should do is to put round pegs in round holes. It will be achievable when states have the autonomy to control their resources.
