Tragic Moments In Football History That Made The Whole World Cry

The world has witnessed alot of tragic events that has happened in the game of football. Some includes: stadium disaster, on field accidents and plane crash. Most of these disasters has resulted to many people dying, and getting injured expecially on the pitch. These incidents are very painful, and has made lots of football fans cry. Let's look at some of these tragic moments in football history.

 

1. The Munich Air plane crash

 

These disaster marked a very sad day in the history of Manchester United. An airplane carrying Manchester United players crashed, the football club lost 8 players along with 15 other players. This happened on February 6th 1958, where 20 out of 44 passengers died, the rest were badly injured and taken to the nearest hospital in Munich, right in the hospital 3 more people died leaving them with 21 survivors.

 

The airplane landed at the airport to refuel, after refueling, it attempted to take off but had an engine problem immediately. The crew wanted to leave immediately, because their flight had to be delayed due to bad engine and bad weather condition. So they tried to take off again, but due to it was snowing heavily and the runway was not good enough it didn't allow the plane attain its height to take off. It went off the runway and crashed into the fence. As a result of the accident Seven Manchester United players died immediately at the spot.

 

2. Leicester City helicopter crash

 

On 27th October 2018, a helicopter crashed after taking off from the King power stadium, which was the football stadium of Leicester City football club. All five people in the helicopter, including the pilot and owner of the football club was killed. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch discovered what led to the crash, to be a loss of yaw control and they found that the pin had become disconnected, resulting in the helicopter becoming uneasy to control.

 

3. Antonio Puerta

 

Antonio Puerta, was a professional football player who played for Spanish club Sevilla. After three months of helping Sevilla win the UEFA Cup, he collapsed while playing a La liga match against Getafe. He died few days later after suffering from multiple organ failure, due to cardiac arrest. Sergio Ramos drew a tattoo tribute on his body, to Puerta and wore a shirt dedicated to him as Spain won the 2010 World Cup.

 

4. The disaster that occurred in Heysel Stadium

 

This happened on May 29th 1985, which was the day of the European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool. It was expected to be a very great day, but turned out to be the worst day ever in history. The stadium was terrible before the match kicked off.

 

Walls of the stadium were not strong, and fans weren't separated properly to even prevent riot. Later on in the match, riot started and Liverpool fans started throwing rocks at juventus fans. This resulted in juventus supporters running away, and climbing the walls of the stadium trying to avoid the Liverpool fans and the rocks, but something drastic happened, the walls of the stadium collapsed, and killed over 39 people and 600 people were injured.

 

This resulted in all English clubs to be banned from European league for five years, while Liverpool had extra 6 years added to their ban.

 

5. Port Said stadium riot

 

There was a match between Al- Ahly, and Al-Masry on February 1st 2012 in the Port said stadium. The tragic incident started before the match, as a result of the Al-Masry fans refusing to leave the pitch. After the final whistle, Al-Masry fans stormed the pitch and started a riot having in possession with them knives, stones and bottles attacking their oppositions.

 

These resulted the players running for their dear lives, into their changing room with the help of police men. After the players fled, Al-Masry fans attacked the Al-Ahly supporters, due to the closed doors they couldn't escape. The riot ended and this resulted to the death of 72 Al-Ahly fans, a police officer and 1 Al-Masry fan, and over 500 people were injured. This would remain the biggest disaster in football game in this 21st century.

 

6. Bradford City stadium fire

 

This occurred in a match between Bradford City, and Lincoln City on May 11th 1985. The stadium had so many issues which includes, outdated wooden roofs and holes in the stands. These issues has been pointed out severally, but the management didn't take it seriously.

 

The match between the two sides started, and went on without issues, until the second half when smokes were seen coming from the stands. At first it was taken normal, until the wind helped the fire increase and trapped some people on their seats,while some escaped. The closed doors didn't help, because close to 56 people were burnt to death and 265 people were injured. This still remains the biggest fire incident in the history of British football.
