“Being a virgin in this day and age is something to be proud of. You are like a unicorn.” “I am a virgin and I brought up all my children to be the same” – Shirley Bassey.
A virgin is a person who has never had sexual intercourse. There are many benefits for one who decides to remain a virgin till marriage. Below are those benefits:
- No unwanted pregnancy: There is no way a virgin can become pregnant; except by the power of the Holy Spirit as in the case of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
- Not falling in love cheaply: A virgin does not fall in love with any person who comes her way unlike non-virgins; and therefore, makes some avoidable mistakes. To most virgins, love is not blind; it has some sense.
- Not Contacting HIV/AIDS: A virgin is at a lower risk of contacting HIV infection, which is transmitted mostly by sexual intercourse. She may still be at risk with blood infection through cut skin, sharing needles, etc.
- Controlled lust: Most of the activities of non-virgins are borne out of lust which we shall define here as an exaggeration of the feeling of love to such a point that it becomes closer to hate than love. Most have seen how those in ‘lust' have harmed their objects of affection in the name of jealousy or anger. True love is calm and never violent, and never wants to harm.
- True Love: There is a lot of truth in virgin marriages. A woman who marries as a virgin rarely sees, or complains of problems as often as the non-virgins.
- Early Marriage: It is difficult to find a virgin who has a problem getting married; especially at an early age which biology teaches is the optimal time for conception, and establishing a long and lasting relationship.
- Preparedness for Marriage: Virgins tend to be better prepared for marriage than non-virgins because of excitement. The non-virgin are worried about the future and all the ugly things they had done in the past; and therefore, have to make conscious effort to let their marriage work if they so wish.
- Respect from husband: Most men tend to respect virgins throughout their marriage as vowed. Virgins rarely have break-up marriages, because of the trust they earn from their husbands.
- No Sexual deviation: It is difficult to define deviation in sexual behaviour, but we can say, it is any form of sexual behaviour that brings biological harm. It is impossible to see a true virgin involving in any form of sexual behaviour that may be considered deviant by any standard.
- Fertility: It is difficult to find a woman who got married as a virgin having problems getting pregnant. Although some are born with an infertility problem, but the acquired ones are rarely found in virgins. For example, STIs which cause infertility in both male and female are not found in virgins.
