10. Mangalitsa Pig AKA the pig in Sheep clothing
The birthplace of this curly-haired pig is Hungary, where it was discovered in the mid 19th century. Due to the fleece covering the animal, it resembles a sheep, therefore its name. This is the last pig in existence to boast such an amazing winter coat.
Tragically, it was near extinct by the 1990s, when fewer than 200 pigs could be found in Hungary, all because of their extraordinary taste lard. Thankfully nowadays, their future look brighter!
9. Rhinopithecus or Golden snub-nosed monkey
The name of this species is Roxellana and there is a story behind it.
It is believed that they are called this way after the supposedly snub-nosed courtesan of Suleiman the Magnificent, a 16th century Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
Another interesting thing is the difference between the male and the female monkeys; the male is heavier than the female and of a different color. The females have darker or black tones on their forehead and upper parts.
The infants have such a light coat, it may seem white in the sunlight.
8. Emperor Tamarin
This animal looks like a real emperor or at least a wise old man with its fabulous mustache.
And indeed, they were called like this because of the resemblance of their mustache to that of German Emperor Willhelm II.
They are small in size but their tail is somewhat long. They live in groups of between 4-20 animals and often give birth to twins and the other animals help in looking after the babies. They feed of flowers, nectar and fruit but they also feed on frogs, snails and small birds.
7. Patagonian Mara
One would be left wondering if this is a kangaroo or hare. Don’t bother yourself; it is a combination of the two!
Patagonian Mara is the fourth largest rodent on this planet and there several facts about them.Females often put offspring into crèches for safety while the male guard the babies.
They grunt when they try to threaten and also squeal like guinea pigs.
They can leap up to 6 feet in the air.
6. Fluffy Cow
There are several secrets surrounding these big animals. First of all, it is not a new breed. The thing is, they are looked after by special people, whose work is to wash, dry and use product to style the animals so they look as fluffy as they do. This has to be maintained daily and will take months of regular grooming before they can look this fluffy.
5. Markhor Goat
The males grow tall, so also their horns but the females only grow up to 10 inches. They are strict vegans.
4. Raccoon Dog
Despite having raccoon like markings on their fur, they are not very closely related to the North American raccoon. They are much closer relatives to domesticated dogs, wolves and foxes.
They mate for life and a pair of them works together raising and bringing up their kids. When the female is pregnant, the partner brings food and flowers to her. Although nobody had seen it, so it may not be true.
They are the only mammals of the dog family that goes into short periods of hibernation and what is even more amazing is that they choose to bed down in pairs like husband and wife.
3. Blue Footed Booby
These charismatic birds are sure to catch your eye if you ever visit the Galapagos Islands. They can look a bit clumsy and comical on land but they are excellent at flying and swimming. The birds have funny and complicated mating rituals.
To attract a female, the male perform some dance with the elements of high-stepping, stamping their feet and sky pointing, raising their bill up into the air accompanied with high-pitched whistling. If a female is impressed enough, she may come up to the male, touch him with her bill and join the dance.
2. Malaya Colugo AKA the Flying Lemur
It eyes probably see a lot and seem to find everything surprising. Funny enough, it doesn’t fly and it is not a lemur. Yeah, this happens all the time, the name-calling went wrong. So, why the name?
Colugo has a large gliding membrane, like a flying squirrel and they can glide for long distances between trees standing far apart.
The paradox with this small animal is that they live in trees but they are awkward climbers and not very strong.
1. Venezuelan Poodle Moth
This moth was discovered in 2009 and it comes from Venezuela. It hairs serve for heating, most insects have hairs for protection, smelling and sensing the environment, this may be true about this insect too.
As it is a new discovery, little is known about it.
