Sack Of Bayelsa Governor; See Who Should Be Sworn In As The Next Governor

As the tribunal nullified the election of Bayelsa state governor Duoye Diri. The trbunal owed it's ruling on the unlawful exclusion of the candidate of the Advanced National Democratic Party, Lucky King George.

ANDP had approached the Court after being excluded from the November 2019 election by INEC as a result of the party's running mate not meeting up the minimum age required by law for such Office. The running mate was 34 years old, a year short of the required age of 35 years. But the former running mate was duely substituted before the election.

It should be recalled that the sacked governor was made governor by a court ruling. A supreme Court judgement in February, nullified the election of David Lyon, a day to his swearing in as a result of irregularities in the certificates presented by his deputy.

The court ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to the next party with the highest number of votes and that is how Duoye Diri of PDP was sworn in.

Today the same court that made him governor has also sacked him through a verdict of the tribunal.

In a judgement given by a panel of three judges led by George Yunusa Musa, the tribunal nullified the entire election and ordered INEC to conduct a fresh election within ninety days making sure that the candidate of the ANDP is included in the ballot.
By this judgement the next person in line to be sworn in as the governor of Bayelsa state in an acting capacity as stipulated by the law, is the speaker of Bayelsa state house of assembly, Honourable Abraham Njobere.

Abraham Njobere was the house deputy speaker before his elevation as the speaker in February this year.
But his swearing in as the acting governor of the state will only be possible if the governor fails to appeal the judgement. But information from the former governor of the state indicates that the party will appeal the judgement. Hear what former governor Dickson said while commenting on the judgement;
"There is no vacancy in the Bayelsa Government House. Diri remains Governor until the Supreme Court decides.
Of course what this means is that the PDP will appeal this decision".

So if the party decides to appeal, we may have to wait for the verdict of the supreme Court , that will ensure the swearing in of Abraham Njobere as the acting governor as of Bayelsa state if the judgement of the tribunal is affirmed. I hope most of you will be eager to see Honourable Abraham sworn in as the acting governor of Bayelsa state. But APC will do everything within it's powers to reclaim Bayelsa state if there happens to be a fresh election in the state being the party that originally worn the election.
