A mild drama took place on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway last Wednesday when a self-acclaimed soldier took to his heels on sighting a Nigerian Army operational vehicle on the ever-busy road.
The “soldier”, 39-year-old Charles Adam, was apparently hanging out on the road for an escort job when suddenly he created a scene that aroused suspicion.
The police patrol men from the Redeemed Camp Division, witnessed the strange development and suspected him as an impostor.
The eagle-eyed policemen consequently gave him a hot chase, caught up and apprehended him.
According to Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a press statement made available to Crimepuzzle, “He was taken before the DPO, CSP Olaiya Martins, who thoroughly interrogated him, leading to his confession as a fake soldier, adding that he always dressed like that to escort vehicles as well as engage in some other illegal military duties.
“Giving his confession, the DPO quickly ordered that a search warrant be executed in his house, following which various incriminating items were recovered, such as two trousers, a belt, a cardigan, beret, fez cap, green mask, a boot and a havasask, all military colour”, Oyeyemi revealed.
Also found in his possession, according to the statement, were five different identity cards, all carrying his passport photographs, as well as some other military documents.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Abeokuta, for discreet investigation.
