Rivers United captain, Austin Festus, has expressed his satisfaction
with their 2-0 win over Rayon Sports, in the first leg of their CAF
Confederation Cup play-off in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Emeka Atuloma and Guy Kuemian scored for the hosts, as they won comfortably.
Atuloma opened scoring in the 29th minute, coverting Ifeanyi Nweke’s cross. Although the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) continuted to press, they failed to convert their chances in the first half.
However, six minutes after the restart, Kuemian fired in from 25 yards to seal the win for Rivers United.
The return leg will take place April 22 in Kigali.
Festus insists there won’t be a repeat of last month’s collapse against Al Merreikh, as they seek to qualify for the group stages.
“We are happy with the 2-0 advantage and we are sure there won’t a repeat of what happened in Sudan,” Festus told Goal.
We have learnt our lessons from what transpired there and have put it behind us. They (Rayon Sports) came all out to neutralize our tactics but we proved to be superior and I do not see them beating us in the return leg.”
