Online Security Tips

.com/blogger_img_proxy/Is your personal, professional and financial information properly protected from online thieves?  Okay I’m sure you’ve been told change your password often, And we’ve all heard the warnings: Never use the same password across accounts; don’t choose familiar words or numbers; change your password frequently.

How in the world do you keep your personal data secure and remember all our passwords? Would you like some additional online security tips?

How to Choose a Password

The experts at Google say that a distinct and longer password with a combination of letters numbers and symbols is more difficult for hackers to crack. They recommend creating a password using a phrase that only you know. For example, “I love both dogs and cats” becomes !lbd@c.

Microsoft warns us, to watch out for common letter to symbol conversions, such as using the numeral “0″ for the letter “o” or “3″ for the letter “e,” as cybercriminals’ have sophisticated tools to catch this.

IDentity Theft 911 suggests that you take a line from your favorite poem or song and use letters from that line to form your password. For example, “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” into “!sMkSC!”

Because you’ll need different passwords for each of your online accounts, Google recommends each password phrase be tied to the type of website you’re accessing. In other words, “!w2t@tw” might be a potential password to your favorite travel site.

Remembering Passwords Safely

Even with the examples above, when you’re trying to manage numerous accounts and you use more than one machine, it’s easy to forget of all of your login information. If you’re having trouble remembering all your passwords, you have a few options:

Use a Password Manager: A password manager is an app or program that stores your usernames and passwords securely. You can customize it to autofill each of your usernames and passwords. Some apps will even generate strong passwords for you. Some password managers also have an option that allows you to set a master password, which protects access to all your login information passwords. One of the best and most affordable password managers available is RoboForm it’s not only affordable and easy to use, it also has very strong encryption, the best part is that you can even give it a try at no cost.

Set Password Recovery Options: Many websites have a password recovery option so you never get locked out of your account; you simply enter an alternative email, your mobile phone number or your home phone number to receive an automated reset link in the event you’re locked out of your account, but it does take extra time to access your email account, open the link and create a new password.

Go Old School: You also have the option to write down all of your usernames and passwords on a legal pad but be sure to keep your list in a safe place away from your computer. Google warns, not to store them in a file on your computer or any electronic device.  This method will work as long as you have your legal pad with you every place you go and don’t lose or misplace it.

Once you’ve decided on a system for choosing your usernames, strong passwords, how you will store and remember them, you’ll be able to minimize the chances of becoming a victim of cyber theft and compromising your online accounts.
