Believe it or not, Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly called time on their pursuit of Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria because, as PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi put it, "he was too expensive."
Al-Khelaifi's comments came at David Luiz's unveiling on Thursday, and with PSG suddenly concerned about Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, Manchester United are reportedly the "favorites" to acquire Di Maria in the event that he leaves the Santiago Bernabéu.
PSG were slapped with a fine of €60 million in May for breaching FFP regulations, specifically accruing losses that exceed the €45-million limit over the past two seasons. Having just paid €60 million for David Luiz, there were always questions about how the French club would foot the bill for Di Maria.
But while Manchester United are now listed as "favorites" to land the Argentinian winger, his interest in playing Champions League football this season could stand in the way of a move to Old Trafford. ESPN FC recently reported that his desire to play Champions League football was the reason he favored a move to Real Madrid as the Red Devils missed out on the current edition of the tournament.
Di Maria has been rumored to be leaving Real Madrid since the club signed Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, two deals that made an already-crowded midfield even more crowded.
